Five Hundred Arhats · No.77 The Venerable Kṣudrapanthaka

Kṣudrapanthaka, also rendered as the disciple 'Little Road,' is said to have been dull by nature yet to have won the fruit through single-minded recitation and sweeping the ground of the mind. The venerable holds a small whisk with an artless yet steadfast expression, embodying the inspiring spirit of a slow faculty that never gives up, enters one gate deeply and succeeds through patient persistence.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
