Five Hundred Arhats · No.495 The Venerable Six Faculties Pure

'Six faculties pure' means the six faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind are pure, faculty and object unstained, every gate of the six faculties a pure shrine; the name marks one with six pure faculties, free of faculty-object. The venerable makes a purifying gesture with a pure look, possessing the purity of six pure faculties, unstained faculty and object, bright faculties, realizing the pure way at the six faculty-gates.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
