Five Hundred Arhats · No.475 The Venerable Universal Flame-Light

'Universal flame-light' means flame-light illumining all, wisdom-flame burning everywhere, radiance without edge, universally ablaze, illumining all with wisdom-flame; the name marks one whose flame-light shines universally, wisdom-flame burning everywhere. The venerable makes a flame-bright gesture with a blazing look, possessing the brightness of universal flame-light, wisdom-flame everywhere, boundless radiance, breaking dark and lighting the world with blazing flame-light.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
