Five Hundred Arhats · No.462 The Venerable Light of Great Virtue

'Light of great virtue' means possessing the virtue of a great sage, radiance eminent, the light of sage-virtue illumining the world, the luminous one among great sages; the name marks one whose sage-virtue is vast, whose light shines on the world. The venerable glows with virtuous light and a bright look, possessing the brightness of a great sage's virtue, universal radiance, sage-virtue lighting the world, setting forth the true Dharma through great sage-light.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
