Five Hundred Arhats · No.450 The Venerable Clear Faith

'Clear faith' means pure faith lucid and still, like clear water settled, the faith-faculty pure, the heart of faith transparent, not muddied by doubt; the name marks one whose pure faith is lucid, whose faith-faculty is pure. The venerable looks clear and still with a transparent air, possessing the clarity of lucid pure faith, a pure faith-faculty, an unmuddied faithful heart, abiding in the true Dharma through transparent faith.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
