Five Hundred Arhats · No.434 The Venerable Acala the Unmoving

Here 'unmoving' is the core (close to Sanskrit Acala, immovable), with a transliterated nominal ending; it means unmoved by the eight worldly winds and afflictions, abiding in the unmoving samādhi, unshaken by outer objects; the name marks one abiding unmoved, whom the eight winds cannot shake. The venerable sits upright and cross-legged with a still look, possessing the composure of being unmoved by objects, abiding still, unshaken by the eight winds, resting in samādhi with an unmoving heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
