Five Hundred Arhats · No.419 The Venerable Moon of Bodhi

'Moon of bodhi' means the bodhi-heart like the moon, cool and bright, giving beings light in the dark; the moon-disk is cool wisdom and bodhi is awakening; the name marks one approaching bodhi through cool moon-wisdom. The venerable looks clear-bright and pure, possessing the purity of a heart like the moon-disk, cool and bright, illumining with moon-wisdom, approaching supreme bodhi.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
