Five Hundred Arhats · No.379 The Venerable Seated in Coolness

'Seated in coolness' means resting in the coolness of nirvāṇa, far from the fever of affliction, attaining the cool bliss of cessation, body and mind still; the name marks one abiding in coolness, beyond fever, attaining stillness. The venerable sits at ease with a cool, clear look, possessing the coolness of seated coolness, far from fever, the bliss of cessation, abiding in nirvāṇa's coolness with an unconditioned heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
