Five Hundred Arhats · No.311 The Venerable Golden Treasury of Dharma

'Golden treasury of Dharma' means being richly endowed with the store of the Buddha's teaching, true, firm and precious as gold; the Dharma treasury holds every teaching, and gold figures its imperishable constancy; the name marks one who contains the true teaching, firm as gold. The venerable looks grave and substantial, possessing the solidity of holding the Dharma treasury, true and firm as gold, containing the Buddha's teaching, taking imperishable Dharma as the mind's store.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
