Five Hundred Arhats · No.139 The Venerable of Indra's Net

'Indra's net' is the net of the god Indra, in which one jewel reflects a thousand, layer upon layer without end, every thing unobstructed; the name marks one who contemplates the dependent origination of the Dharma realm, where one and many contain each other in boundless harmony. The venerable meditates with deep features, possessing the rounded vision of entering the Huayan Indra's net, where one is all, within the boundlessly interpenetrating Dharma realm.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
