Five Hundred Arhats · Frontispiece

This sheet is the frontispiece (opening cover) of Li Zongyi's hand-painted ink handscroll Five Hundred Arhats — not the portrait of any single arhat, but the opening that gathers the whole scroll. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice; unfolding from this frontispiece, the sacred assembly appears in sequence in boundless variety. The frontispiece sets the guiding theme and leads the entire scroll; only together with the five hundred individual figures does the complete set stand whole. It is an indispensable part of this one-of-a-kind handscroll and essential to collecting the full work.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and ink tones layered from dense to pale; the blank paper breathes Zen. From this frontispiece to the five hundred sacred figures the whole scroll flows as one, blending monastic solemnity with literati ease — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted handscroll uniting faith, art and collectibility.
