In ink, Zhong Kui holds his sword crosswise before his chest, sinking low in a firm stance, every muscle tensed as he grapples with a brute force; the ink is heavy, the lines vigorous, yet his face carries a faint dismissive half-smile as if to say "mere brute strength is nothing." Within the tense wrestling hides the composure of overcoming force with skill.

"A Clash of Brute Force" uses "ox-strength" as a metaphor for the quarrel of the headstrong who know only blunt force and no flexibility. Though locked in contest, Zhong Kui looks at ease—he knows outcomes are decided not by might but by uprightness, wisdom and method. The artist offers a lesson: meeting everything head-on and coercing by force often leaves both sides wounded; persuading by reason and winning by wisdom is the higher art. Not to contest a brute for momentary bravado is true courage and intelligence. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit.
