In pale color Zhong Kui raises his sword overhead, bares his belly and laughs heartily, torso twisting as if dancing; far from fearsome, the mischievous spirits under his brush are led round and round, dancing to his sword. The scene is witty and lively—no grim slaughter of demons, but rather an exuberant game.

"Leading the Spirits in Dance" turns demon-quelling into demon-dancing, a most refined humor: the truly strong need not rage or scowl—with one sword and a burst of laughter they can coax the inner "ghosts" into a dance. It is a wisdom of dissolving fixation with largesse and gathering chaos with composure: rather than wrestle your troubles, laugh them into a dance, then gently let them go. Painted in the spare freehand (xieyi) manner, the work uses bold, economical strokes in which ink and cinnabar range from dense to pale, bringing Zhong Kui to life in just a few assured marks. The figure is delightfully exaggerated yet disciplined, weaving a contemporary, good-humored spirit into the folk tradition of the demon-quelling, blessing-bringing deity—at once solemn and playful. In Chinese folklore the cinnabar-red Zhong Kui guards the home and wards off evil; the artist revitalizes this age-old theme in freehand spirit.
