Five Hundred Arhats · No.451 The Venerable Reverent and Upright in Conduct

'Reverent and upright in conduct' means acting with reverence, upright without crookedness, ever holding the three jewels, teachers and friends in respect, the three actions upright, cultivating oneself through reverent rectitude; the name marks one reverent in conduct, practicing uprightness. The venerable makes an upright-standing gesture with a respectful look, possessing the gravity of reverent conduct, upright without crookedness, respectfully serving superiors, practicing the holy life with an upright heart.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
