Five Hundred Arhats · No.441 The Venerable Joy of Teaching and Its Fruit

'Joy of teaching and its fruit' means the unhindered eloquence of joyful teaching, gladly expounding the Dharma, guiding through joyful eloquence, and through joyful teaching attaining the fruit of Dharma-joy, teaching itself bearing fruit; the name marks one tireless in joyful teaching, expounding and realizing fruit. The venerable makes a glad-teaching gesture with a delighted look, possessing the delight of joyful eloquence, glad and tireless, teaching that realizes fruit, benefiting beings through Dharma-joy teaching.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
