Five Hundred Arhats · No.380 The Venerable Sorrowless Eyes

'Sorrowless eyes' means beholding beings with kind eyes free of sorrow, the wisdom-eye realizing the principle of sorrowlessness, looking equally with kind eyes, seeing nothing to grieve; the name marks one who views beings with kind eyes, free and at ease. The venerable's gaze is kind with a relaxed look, possessing the ease of equal kind eyes, a sorrowless wisdom-eye, equally beholding beings, universally viewing them with sorrowless kind eyes.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
