Five Hundred Arhats · No.310 The Venerable Supreme-Mind Practice

'Supreme-mind practice' means cultivating all deeds with the foremost mind, the aspiration supreme and the practice likewise supreme, gathering every action under the awakening mind; the name marks one who practices from a supreme mind, his cultivation most excellent. The venerable makes a vigorous gesture with an earnest look, possessing the sincerity of practicing with a supreme mind, the aspiration excellent, every deed diligent, all actions held by the foremost awakening mind.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
