Five Hundred Arhats · No.305 The Venerable Dharma of Non-Regression

'Dharma of non-regression' means reaching the stage of non-retrogression (avaivartika) from supreme awakening, never losing the Dharma realized, advancing each moment without falling back; the name marks one who has attained the non-retrogressing stage, firm in the Dharma. The venerable looks firmly settled and steady, possessing the steadiness of non-regression in Dharma, attaining avaivartika, advancing moment by moment, with no falling back at all.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
