Five Hundred Arhats · No.278 The Venerable Mountain of Universal Triumph

'Mountain of universal triumph' means universally excelling all yet firm as a mountain, surpassing all in the Dharma with a will unshakable as a peak; the name marks one who universally triumphs over every sphere, firm as a mountain. The venerable stands upright with a resolute look, possessing the uprightness of excelling all, firm as a mountain, will unassailable, climbing the shore of awakening through a firm, victorious resolve.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
