Five Hundred Arhats · No.141 The Venerable Jewel Light

'Jewel light' is the radiance emitted by the Dharma-jewel, pure and majestic, illumining ignorance through; the name marks one who holds the light of the Dharma-jewel, whose flame of wisdom blazes. The venerable has a warm countenance with light held within, possessing the bright majesty of the Dharma-jewel's flowing radiance, the wisdom-lamp's flame, inspiring beings with jewel-light and illumining the road to awakening.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
