Five Hundred Arhats · No.116 The Venerable Kṣānti

Kṣānti is the Sanskrit term for the pāramitā of patient forbearance among the six perfections—keeping the heart unmoved in all adverse and pleasant conditions and abiding in the nature of things; the name marks one whose practice of patience is complete, equal toward foe and friend. The venerable looks gentle and still as deep water, possessing the deep cultivation of enduring the hard to endure, acting kindly without anger and reaching the far shore through patience.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
