Five Hundred Arhats · No.92 The Venerable of the Pratyeka's Turning Wisdom

'Pratyeka' is the pratyekabuddha, awakened by contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination, and 'turning wisdom' means turning delusion into the wisdom of awakening; the name marks one of pratyeka capacity who turns consciousness into wisdom and awakens alone without a teacher. The venerable looks self-contained, contemplating causation, showing the transcendence of awakening through observing conditions, needing no teacher, with wisdom turning by itself.

Painted by Li Zongyi in the freehand Chinese ink (xieyi) tradition, the brushwork is fluent and the ink tones layered from dense to pale, capturing the arhat’s spirit in a few assured strokes. The blank paper itself breathes Zen; figure and spirit are one, blending monastic solemnity with the literati’s ease. Each of the Five Hundred Arhats bears its own name and practice, uniting faith, art and collectibility — an original, non-reproducible hand-painted work.
